Sport of Kings - Bird Art:

THE ARTIST:

Ian and Jyl pioneered the use of Swamp Kauri in 1973 and set up a workshop and Gallery
at their farm in Warkworth, North Auckland where they had a thriving business for 24 years.
Three years ago Jyl made a dove for the Baptist Church in Snells Beach which inspired her to
make native birds, mounting them on special pieces of native wood, as you see here on the web
site.

THE ORIGINALS:

Jyl draws the shape for the bird which Ian cuts out from a piece of timber and Jyl layers the
paper feathers and paints them. Ian makes the feet and mounts the bird on a suitable piece of
native Puriri timber. They have a 3D effect.

They also have canvases with photos of the original bird art and a series of cards.

PRINTS FOR SALE

The large canvases sell for NZ$295 and the smaller ones NZ$210
The cards are $7 for the larger size and $5 for the small size.

The original bird art can be seen on the walls of the reception at Sport of Kings Motel, in Rotorua.
